Joe and Marie Diaz, Founders of Student Exchange Program

The HBSCA Student Cultural Exchange Program established 1974

Joe Diaz, along with his wife Marie, were founding members of the HBSCA and wanted to start a exchange program between 7th and 8th graders from Hermosa Beach and Loreto, Baja California Mexico.  The program was a huge success and continues to be the longest running program in this age group.  In 2009 HBSCA has expanded the program to include other beach  cities – Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach.

For over 40 years, HBSCA has sponsored 7th & 8th grade students in a cultural exchange program with its Sister City Loreto, Baja California Sur, Mexico. The HBSCA Cultural Exchange Program was certified by the United States Congress and was entered into the congressional record of the 110th Congressional session.

The application process begins each fall. We are looking for interested students from all of the beach cities – Hermosa, Manhattan, and Redondo to participate and experience the many organized activities of the student exchange program. Practice your Spanish language skills by living with a Loreto, Mexico family for one week and learn about their way of life!
